150Nd

The use of 150Nd as double beta decay source in the future SuperNEMO experiment is under study. 150Nd has a high Q-value (3.367 MeV) that makes it a very interesting isotope for several reasons:

  • it has a highly favorable leptonic phase space compared to other double beta decay emitters (100Mo, 82Se, 76Ge...)
  • the expected background from 214Bi (3.27 MeV, radon) will have less impact in the energy region of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay
  • it seems possible to enrich significant amount of 150Nd within reasonable time using some dedicated technology
